30 days of gratitude day 8: the book group

Fair warning, I have written about this here before. Women, age 40ish to age 90ish, come together on Friday mornings and read books, usually theology. Right now, John Shelby Spong on the gospel of John.  We don’t read ahead and discuss (well, some read ahead, but whatever); we read together, and stop and discuss and wonder and make connections. It’s my favorite kind of studying, a pattern I used in the classroom more often than not (why I like teaching plays and poems batter than novels, though there, too, I would read sections together). It’s also a place where we can talk about life. The group begins to gather at 9:30; book discussion ostensibly begins at 10. Lately it’s been more like 10:30 as we share our lives with one another. I’m glad I have them.
