friday five: a healing space

In the wake of the events in Boston this week, chaplain Deb brings us this Friday Five. Where do you go for healing, for comfort.

1. A piece of music

This week, various settings of Psalm 23 with particular attention to Bobby McFerrin’s.

2. A place

The beach.

3. A favorite food (they call it “comfort food” for a reason)

Chocolate. It keeps the Dementors away. (It’s the details like that that make Rowling a genius.)

4. A recreational pastime (that you watch or participate in)

Walking. Reading murder mysteries (even if it’s counterintuitive on weeks like this).

5. A poem, Scripture passage or other literature that speaks to comfort you.

See number one. Also children’s books. Anne of Green Gables (the series) is a go-to when I need comfort.

BONUS: People, animals, friends, family – share a picture of one or many of these who warm your heart.

My first field trip as a parent instead of a student or a teacher was yesterday. We took the kids to Cal Tech where they ate a picnic lunch on the lawn and then went in to see a play production of the children’s book, Skippyjon Jones. It was delightful and WordGirl was thrilled to have me along.

Waiting to go...

Waiting to go…

Yesterday was ShyGuy’s 4th birthday. He spent the day with Grandpa, and then we had his special preschool teacher friends over for ribs and spaghetti. It was a delightful evening.

Big boy bike!

Wow…he got a bike! And what wonderful party guests!

Love Skippyjon Jones! Hope it was a fun play. And yes yes yes to children’s books–or, in my case, movies. I have a good selection of things like “seconhand lions” and “cloudy with a chance of meatballs” and “horton hears a who” for weeks like this….
